Presenting tips

Don Box is evidently an excellent technical conference speaker (not to mention an architect on MS' XML Web Services/Indigo team), and I found this Channel 9 video on the topic of presenting translates nicely to the world of instructor-led training.  Some quick points:

  • understanding your goals are key, namely teaching and enabling learning
  • less is more: the ideal demo uses the minimal ammount of code, speak simply
  • people can remember facts, but concepts must be taught
  • use readable fonts: like Lucida Console, >=14pt.; default text-selection (white on black) is not legible on projectors
  • the importance of voice modulation, ie: speaking slowly is like bolding a font, speaking quietly draws people in
  • what to do when things go wrong
  • "the powerpoint is meaningless"
